SharePoints: Make Full Use of Your Apple File Server (for Free!)

Published February 20th, 2006

SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Finder.

SharePoints AFS FreewareHornWare makes the very useful SharePoints suite of utilities to make the most of the Apple File Server built into every copy of Mac OS X. SharePoints itself can be run as either an application or a preference pane, which I’ve been using for awhile now. SharePoints lets you define and share directories and folders over your network, activating the built-in Apple File Server. (With Mac OS X server, you get access to this through Apple’s own tools.) SharePoints AutoMounter is a separate utility that makes it easy to ensure that shared volumes are mounted on login for network users. For example, we share one folder (on my G5) for our iPhoto Library, and this will make sure that folder is mounted on other machines when users want to use iPhoto. If you want to share a volume on your Mac through your network, there’s nothing easier (or less expensive) than this! Remember that HornWare’s products are donationware… support Mac OS X software developers!
