Jumpcut: Make your clipbaord dance

Jumpcut Clipboard FreewareOriginally downloaded 6/14/06. OK, so let’s see… I’m actually in good shape with clipboard stuff. I keep Quicksilver running all the time, and it has a clipboard history pane, though its preview function is virtually nil. I also keep either PiquantMenu or Butler running, each of which have a decent clipboard memorizer/cutter/paster. Still, this open source freebee sounds like it’s worth trying out.

Update 10/29/06. Well, I was just seduced by the app’s cool icon and by a positive review of Jumpcut in MacWorld. As I thought, I already have three of the best clipboard-management utilities available. Some time back, I had purchased iClip, which was (and is) very good, but doesn’t compare with ClawMenu or Quicksilver when managing your clipboard history. (Of course, iClip has other features, too, but I’ve found TextExpander to be much more useful and less intrusive than iClip.)

In comparison with ClawMenu’s clipboard, Jumpcut just isn’t very useful. It puts an icon in your menubar and gives you a keyboard shortcut for summoning its bezel window, which you then have to cycle through to find the clipboard item you want… only, Jumpcut provides no previews and appears to only handle text, not images. The menubar item also stores your clipboard history in its menu. Quicksilver’s clipboard history pane is a more bare-bones version than ClawMenu’s, but it’s still better than Jumpcut. Another great clipboard utility I’ve discovered recently is the one built into SOHO Notes. Absolutely awesome. It’s one of the items available in Soho Notes’ ever-present “dock” drawer, which I keep in the lower left-hand corner of my screen. Of course, it’s a very small—almost insignificant—part of Soho Notes, but if I ever buy that software, I’ll probably switch to using it instead of ClawMenu’s (which is what I use most of the time now).

Version as tested: 0.6.
