SOHO Notes: Premier Digital Note-Taking Application for Macintosh
Originally downloaded 5/12/06.StickyBrain is one of the first “digital note-taking assistant” apps I tried a couple of years ago, when it seemed quite innovative. I honestly didn’t care for it much… the application embedded itself into all nooks and crannies of the system and even then was confusing to use. I never have figured out what FlashNotes are for… certainly, they don’t do what I think they should do. And Chronos released Soho Notes a few months ago as, basically, an upgraded version of StickyBrain. So, here I go… I’m putting it on the list to try out. I’m way behind in evaluations generally right now, and already have a stack of tools in this category–in particular, BareBones’ Yojimbo, which has caused quite a stir in the Mac software world. In the meantime, I’ll keep using DevonThink Pro with one eye on the competition.
Update 7/16/06 Well, I guess this shouldn’t be a huge surprise given the questions I raised a couple months back… StickyBrain is no more. Rather, with the release of Soho Notes 5.5, its price was lowered to roughly that of StickyBrain, and StickyBrain customers get the enhanced SohoNotes features for the same price. Here’s Chronos explanation. I’ve now downloaded version 5.5.
Update 11/5/06. I’ve written up my notes on Soho Notes, as well as 5 other PIM software apps, in a November 2006 article, “An Ongoing Review of Personal Information Management Tools for Mac OS X: No Perfect Solution (Yet)“. I’m putting Soho Notes in the “reject” pile for now, but it’s one that I’ll be keeping an eye on. I don’t consider the case closed on my choice of DevonThink Pro in this product category.
Version as tested: 5.6.2.
