Mounty: A Really Fast Disk Mounter

Mounty: Mount disk images much faster than Apple’s DiskImageMounter

Mounty DMG Mounting FreewareOriginally downloaded 11/17/06. Wow… I think this one’s going to do what Flashmount said it would: Mount disk images almost in the blink of an eye, while passing files it can’t handle (mainly those with license-agreement screens) to Apple’s default tool. I’ve tried it a few times now and am very pleased, but I want to go ahead and make it the default DMG mounter for a few days and see how it does. One cool feature is that Mounty can also automatically extract Gzip archives and then mount the resulting file, if it’s a disk image. Pretty cool! I ran across Mounty on the website of developer Garsten Blüm, who has managed to put together an impressive collection of useful Mac OS X utilities (all of them freeware that I’ve seen so far).

Update 12/12/06. Yep… it’s a go! I’ve had Mounty running as my default disk image mounter for the last month, and it’s reliable, very fast, and knows when it can’t handle a given disk image. The only thing that could be improved is to have Mounty silently pass the task of mounting disk images that require license agreement dialogs to the default OS X mounter, rather than making me click a dialog box acknowledging its failure. So far, the speed improvement has been worth that small price.

Update 2/14/07. Mounty had been working great for me until last week, when suddenly it started mis-handling all disk images that have license screens. Normally, it passes them to the regular system mounter, but that no longer works. It’s getting to be so bad I may have to shut Mounty down. If I find the time, I’ll write to the developer, who also needs to update Mounty for Intel Macs. In the meantime, I’m backing Mounty out of the Recommended apps list.

Version as tested: 1.6.
